  Its choosing to be a slave to

Mercy
  Forgiveness is an attribute of mercy
  Forgiveness is conditional in that it is dependent on remorse.  You demonstrate the remorse through your change of heart.  Repentance is having that change of heart and trying to repair that damage you done.
